While the clean install is the “best”, sometime it is not an option, for example when you don’t have what you need to install some programs, ie no product key or installation file. In that kind of a situation you can consider doing an in-place update
After doing an in-place upgrade using the Media Creation Tool, everything should be how you left it.
When running the Media Creation Tool, select 'Upgrade this PC now', and it will inform you what needs to be removed or not, but otherwise it should go very smoothly, and that is the ideal and very likely scenario.
